Clyde Prestowitz is founder and President of the Economic Strategy Institute. His leadership has propelled ESI into an important role in the public policy process, influencing and often defining the terms of the debate in the areas of international trade policy, economic competitiveness, and the effects of globalization. Mr. Prestowitz has played key roles in achieving congressional passage of NAFTA and in shaping the final content of the Uruguay Round, as well as providing the intellectual basis for current U.S. trade policies toward Japan, China, and Korea.

Stephen Olson - Managing Director, Asia

AREAS OF EXPERTISE: Asia, the Middle East, International Trade, International Business, Development, and Globalization

Over the course of his 20 year international career, Stephen Olson has lived and worked in Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, holding senior executive positions in the private sector, international organizations, and government.

Most recently, Mr. Olson served as the Vice Chairman for Policy and Business Development at the Cairo-based ARTOC Group for Investment and Development, one of the leading conglomerates in the Middle East. Mr. Olson was a member of ARTOC's Senior Executive Committee, which oversees the development and implementation of individual company business plans. He also developed and negotiated new international trade and business opportunities for ARTOC, especially in Asia, and lead ARTOC's participation in organizations such as the World Economic Forum and the Arab Business Council. He also spear-headed a major corporate re-branding exercise, including a refreshed corporate identity and an extensive television advertising campaign on CNN International.

Hiromi Murakami - Senior Fellow

AREAS OF EXPERTISE: State-Industry Relations, Japanese Political Economy, East Asian Security

Hiromi Murakami is a senior fellow with the Economic Strategy Institute. She led Asian research and focuses on Asian economic development models, state-industry relations, and comparative political studies at ESI. She was involved in various projects in US/Japanese institutions, including Center for Strategic and International Studies Global Health Policy Center, the Health and Global Policy Institute, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. Murakami holds an MBA in international business, M.A. and Ph.D. in international relations from the School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, and B.S. in Physics from Sophia University.


Kate Brown - Director of Communications

Kate Brown runs a freelance public relations business specializing in promotion of people within the fields of public affairs, foreign policy, the economy, global trade, politics, and media. Her clients include, The Washington Monthly, the Economic Strategy Institute, the National Security Network, and others. Before launching out on her own in March of 2012, Kate was the director of public relations and marketing at Foreign Policy Magazine and media relations manager for the New America Foundation. Kate also ran media relations for The Washington Times, was a freelance producer for the BBC, and originally came to Washington, DC to help launch Washington Post Radio after six years of producing and on-air work at the NPR affiliate in WI, WPR.

David Brandin - Chief Technology Officer

David Brandin is an established computer scientist and communications technologist. At ESI, he analyzes various areas of technology development and technology policy.

Prior to joining ESI, Mr. Brandin was President of Strategic Software Services, a consulting company specialized in international business development in the communications and networking sectors. Mr. Brandin has led worldwide business initiatives at women.com – the leading Internet destination for women – and Interop. Formerly, he also served as Executive Vice-President for international operations and strategic relationships of the McKinley Group, producer of the Internet search engine Magellan, now part of Excite; and Vice President and Director of SRI International, where he was responsible for all research in artificial intelligence, computer science, robotics and telecommunications.

Robert Cohen - Fellow

AREAS OF EXPERTISE: Telecommunications Industry, Technology Policy

Robert Cohen is an economist who has analyzed how the emergence of cloud computing, the Internet of Things, machine learning and AI have affected firms’ use of technology and its impact on the economy. He directs the Economic Strategy Institute's project on the economic impact of Cloud Computing, IoT, AI, and ML on the U.S. economy. The project won a Cisco university grant as well as support from IMA, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Berggruen Foundation, Brocade and the OECD. Dr. Cohen has served on the Steering Committee of the Global Grid Forum and directed TM Forum’s Enterprise Cloud Leadership Council. He has been actively involved in IoT related events such as the IoT Slam conferences. He has also spoken on Cloud computing and AI at O’Reilly Strata conferences, Linux Foundation’s Open Networking Summit North America, and a succession of Cloud Expo and Big Data conferences. Firms such as Intel, IBM, Corning, Sun, and Juniper Networks have funded his work on the impact of grid computing and broadband communications on the US economy that ESI has published. Dr. Cohen co-founded the New York part of the academic Internet, NYSERNet, and is a founding member of the Internet Society. He holds a BA from Swarthmore College and a PhD from the New School for Social Research. He is the author or co-author of five books.


Ben Carliner - Fellow

AREAS OF EXPERTISE: Monetary Policy, Exchange Rates, and International Political Economy.

Ben Carliner is a Fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute. Prior to joining ESI, Mr. Carliner worked as a financial journalist in New York for Project Finance International. Mr. Carliner was previously the founder and Editorial Director of a new media company, DigitalUpside, Inc., a major music portal and application service provider on the Internet. Mr. Carliner has also worked for Barron's Business and Financial Weekly and WBAI Radio in New York.

Mr. Carliner holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.A. in International Political Economy and Public Policy from the University of Texas-Austin.

Gladys Scott - Executive Assistant to the President

Gladys Scott is the Executive Assistant to the President and Director of Operations at the Economic Strategy Institute. Prior to joining ESI, Ms. Scott worked as the Special Assistant to the Ambassador at the Embassy of Liberia, in Washington DC. She previously held the position of Travel Coordinator and Assistant Team Leader in the Survey Division at the Commission of Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) in Columbia MD.

Ms. Scott holds a B.A. from Howard University in Washington DC

Carla Tena - Research Associate

AREAS OF EXPERTISE: International Trade, U.S. - Mexico Bilateral Relations, and Immigration.

Carla Tena is a Research Associate at the Economic Strategy Institute. Prior to joining ESI, Carla worked as a Deputy Attach? of the Ministry of Finance at the Embassy of Mexico in Washington D.C. where she coordinated bilateral projects between Mexican Customs and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. She has also worked in Mexico on the Human Rights Commission and the National Immigration Institute.

Carla Tena holds a B.A. in International Relations from the Universidad del Valle de Mexico. She also studied at Arnhem International Business School in the Netherlands. She is fluent in English, Spanish and French.
