A Weekly Profile
Ron Hira of Rochester: Assistant professor of public policy at Rochester Institute of Technology.

New work: Outsourcing America: What's Behind Our National Crisis and How We Can Reclaim American Jobs (AMACOM Books, $22), written with brother Anil Hira.

Synopsis: The book is meant to help the average reader understand what outsourcing is, how much is happening and what the impact on individuals, companies and the country is and will be. Outsourcing America also chronicles why the public debate has been misleading and proposes pragmatic policy solutions to mitigate the negative effects of outsourcing.

Related events: I spoke on this topic to the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Science on June 23 and at the U.S. Senate Democratic Policy Committee on June 30.

Research: I have been working on this topic for the past three years, including travel to India. My areas of expertise are technological innovation, industrial policy and the technology work force.

What I'm reading: Three Billion New Capitalists: The Great Shift of Wealth and Power to the East, by Clyde Prestowitz (Basic Books, $26.95)

Writing advice: Being organized is more important than anything else. It is much more of a marathon than a sprint.
